It had escaped no one's notice that the heavyweights of the Macron camp took the promotion of the «young» Gabriel Attal very badly. They took it upon themselves to announce they were staying on in their ministerial posts and to make it known that they answered only to the President. Against this backdrop, tension is palpable between the new Prime Minister and Gérald Darmanin. On 10 January, Gabriel Attal dedicated his second trip out to security, visiting a police station in the Val d'Oise, and made it very clear that this would be a central issue for him. On 14 January, it was Gabriel Attal who directly convened a crisis cell at Place Beauvau to anticipate the arrival of Cyclone Belal. Given that Gérald Darmanin holds the status of a potential Prime Minister and enjoyed a great deal of autonomy in his duties, he is hardly appreciative of seeing the Prime Minister speak out on his briefs, step on his toes, and being forced to play second fiddle by welcoming him on each of his field visits. To top it all off, the crime figures published on 31 January are frankly poor, with an increase in almost all indicators since 2023. Enough to convince the Interior Minister that it is time to take the next step or consider other options?
