It would appear that the summons rather than the invitation sent by Trump to Emmanuel Macron, and with greater formality to Keir Starmer, is intended to order them not to oppose the American resolution at the Security Council aimed at endorsing Russian conquests in Ukraine. The territorial integrity of that country is not mentioned therein.
Russia, naturally, as well as, it would seem, its Chinese ally, are ready for it.
France and the United Kingdom have their backs to the wall. They hold this permanent seat on the Security Council, a legacy of their past power, resurrected by General de Gaulle and Winston Churchill.
Opposing this unbalanced American resolution could be a new founding act of a strengthened Franco-British partnership. Naturally, we do not possess the power necessary to stand up frontally to the three great powers.
But this act of resistance seems much more necessary and operational than the woolly meetings of the European Union.
