President Macky Sall has carried out a large-scale reshuffle by changing the Prime Minister and also several ministers close to the former head of government and candidate Amadou Ba. The date chosen for the presidential election, following the Constitutional Council's refusal to endorse the conclusions of the «national dialogue», is set for 24 March, and the official campaign will begin tomorrow at midnight.
The PDS (the party of former President Wade, which is supporting the candidacy of his son Karim Wade) is furious about this outcome, which has the effect of depriving their candidate of the opportunity to run. The public figures whose candidacies were rejected by the Constitutional Council join the cohort of the disgruntled. The PDS and others are planning to challenge the decree summoning the electorate before the Supreme Court and are working on a bill aimed at abolishing the Constitutional Council. One thing seems certain: the President of the National Assembly, Amadou Mame Diop, will be at the head of the state as from 2 April.
