It is not so much the attack launched by Hamas on October 7 that is surprising, but its power, coordination, controlled execution, and cruelty. Since the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005, about 6,000 rockets have targeted Israel. They have killed 28 people and injured hundreds in 18 years. The Gaza Strip has, every time, suffered disproportionate retaliation from Israel (for example, 1,500 deaths in 2014). There is little doubt that the terrorist movement that Hamas has become has received aid from one or more foreign powers to achieve such a level of operational nuisance in its actions. Recall that it was only relatively recently that Hamas was recognized as a «terrorist organization.» The existence of a political branch, the Palestinian version of the Muslim Brotherhood, and a separate military branch had led many states to hesitate on the qualification. Netanyahu has not seen Hamas change in nature and size, and in that capacity he bears a crushing responsibility for the massacre of Jews by Hamas and the massacre of Palestinian civilians by the Israeli army that continues unabated. He has Jewish blood and Arab blood on his hands. Who allowed Hamas to change in size?
